5. Conclusion

The preparation of the "National Seismic Hazard Maps for Japan" is the first general attempt to evaluate seismic hazards, and it is desirable that the "Maps" be improved and developed further in the future. It is our sincere hope that this guidebook will be helpful for understanding seismic hazard maps and the seismic environment both in local areas and in the whole of Japan, while also for improving earthquake disaster mitigation.
